UK Week One

 


The UK or the United Kingdom of Great Brittain and Northern Ireland is a European off the north-western coast of the continental mainland. The UK consists of England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Ireland. The difference between hazards are as follows:

  • Hazards: consists of potential danger or damage, such as running a risk of starting a grease fire in your kitchen.
  • Disasters: consists of that potential danger or damage being fulfilled, such as starting a grease fire and your house burning down
  • Catastrophes: consists of damage or danger getting out of hand to an unforeseen level, such as your house burning down causing the entire city block to go up in flames.

Geol9 Week Two: Plate Tectonics Throughout this week our class is exploring plate tectonics and how they affect other disasters around our geographic regions. In the UK, according to the NOAA map, on the mainland, there is really only one connected spot where there is earthquake activity and that is mainly along the South-Eastern part of the UK just below England. This earthquake activity comes from the Eurasia plate that sits within the Atlantic Ocean and continues around more of Europe in Asia. As it relates to the UK, the seismic activity that is created by this fault line is not exceptionally strong, it has the power to create earthquakes but those earthquakes are far to small to create tsunamis.
