Week 16. Final Blog post

The United Kingdom is a country with a vast history and with time comes disasters. So the UK has had some major natural disasters in its proud history, from major winter storms to major floods. There have been a plethora of cataclysmic events in the history of the UK.

The biggest natural disaster in UK history is a hotly debated topic, but one of the worst disasters in the United Kingdom's history was the Bristol Channel flood. Being that it happened in 1607 there is not a great deal of information on what happened.

There are two general ideas on what happened, the more agreed-upon theory is as to what happened came is that there was a storm surge that combined with spring tide as well as some high rivers. The second theory is that there was actually a tsunami that caused it. Outside of whatever it was that caused it the amount of damage and life lost was cataclysmic. There are accounts that at least twelve villages had been entirely erased and hundreds to thousands of lives taken. It was the single largest loss of life from a sudden onset catastrophe.

Luckily these events are not everyday encounters but the UK has had an increased amount of flooding in recent years compared to in the past. To combat this the United Kingdom has focused on response as well as finding ways to track flooding in order to evacuate areas if need be. I think that areas near water, such as rivers or even near the ocean I think is a fantastic way to offset the damage and maintain life in the United Kingdom. The UK government has found that some areas are in more need of this protection as well, areas such as Yorkshire have gotten more funding in order to maintain standards to offset damage from floods each year.

If I were moving to the UK tomorrow areas like Yorkshire, Glastonbury, and Bridgewater would be the last place I would move to. These areas have shown that they are the most likely area to experience flooding in an area that has had an exponential amount of flooding per year. While the most likely place I would go would be Luton, Luton has had the lowest amount of flooding per year with 0.1% of homes experiencing property damage from flooding.
